ONE LAST POST!

Sometimes in life something "seems like a good idea at the time" and it turns out you "bit off a little more than you could chew". That is the case here; deciding to add even a small simple bit of content each day simply does not work with my current "day job" in IT which usually ends up with there being not enough hours in the day.

So, rather than struggle to live up to the "one a day" idea I have decided to discontinue this content. My thanks to those of you who visited from time to time and in particular to the few of you who stopped by almost daily. Thanks for your interest! I will leave the existing content here for "posterity".

IS THIS CONFUSING - REALLY?

This is from the Facebook page Unbelievable Facts. At the time of writing there are 159K comments and a quick scan of the first few suggests that this is rather confusing - is it really? Seems straighforward to me. I will leave the answer/explantion off here but if you are interested feel free to contact me.

A HIGHLY SKILLED DEMONSTRATION OF SELFISHNESS

A rather sad comment on our society is that that many of it's members think supremely selfish and dangerous behavior such as this is "cool" and to be admired. In fact it simply shows an incredibly overgrown ego and a total disrespect for the safety of everyone else on the road.

WHERE PHONE BOOTHS GO TO DIE?

The phone booth is a less and less common artefact of the pre smart phone world but where do they go to die? According to the website worldgeography.com in the UK they go to a phone booth graveyard located between Ripon and Thirsk, near the village of Carlton Miniott.

THE WORLD'S MOST DANGEROUS HIKING TRAIL?

This may or may not be "the world's most dangerous hiking trail"; that is obviously a rather subjective description. That said, while I doubt I will ever get the chance to visit China, if I do I will most likely give this a miss.

A TRAGIC MORNING IN DALLAS

I am not much for politics and do not all that often that often voice my opinions [in public at least]. I have never voted, either back in the UK or since coming to the US, there has never really been anyone I would want to vote for and personally I think anyone who actually wants power has a fatal character flaw that makes them singularly unsuitable to hold power but that is just me. That said this morning I awoke to news of a tragedy in the city I call home, Dallas, and for once I feel obliged to opine.

There is rightful outrage across this country at what seem often times to be unjust shooting deaths of blacks by police; in this age of social media and instant coverage there have been many cases that seemingly cannot be argued, the cell phone footage is too damning, and where the actions of individual police officers were unjust even given the fact they have to make life and death decisions in an instant [and most of us, myself included, do not have, and never will have, the slightest idea of what it is like to try to do that].

I have never lost someone to violence so I guess many would say I do not know what I am talking about - perhaps they are right - but I would like to think that even in what must be the darkest moments of a life I would be able to recognize that randomly targeting a "group" for the ill deeds of an individual cannot be the right thing to do. Personally I do not see the sense in revenge on the individual either, those lost are not returned as a result of it so what is the gain, but at least I can see some sort of perverse logic there.

If someone on my street shoots a friend or family member would it make sense for me then to target everyone on my street? If a car hits my car and kills or injures a family member would I then be justified in seeking to take action against all car drivers; of course not, everyone would see that as insane.

There is good and bad in every group be those groups defined by geography, color, religion, race or anything else for that matter; to think otherwise is not to think at all.

"Stealing" from several different tweets this morning:
  • All Cops are not bad
  • All African Americans are not thugs
  • All Hispanics are not illegal
  • All Whites are not racist
  • All Muslims are not terrorists
  • Labels are for clothes not people

THE WINDOW THAT MORPHS INTO A BALCONY

No idea if this would work out cheaper to build than a conventional balcony and it seems to me that it has a disadvantage over a conventional balcony in that there is no door and the apartment is "open" to the elements when it is used as balcony. So in the heat of summer you are letting hot air in and in the winter cold. All of that said it does look like a rather awesome piece of tech/architecture.

VW KOMBI - EXTREME VARIATIONS

The VW Type 2 or Kombi, known by many names both officially and informally including the Transporter, Bus or Camper, has a loyal and eclectic following and has "spawned" many and varied customizations ranging from simple to complex to downright extreme.

A few days ago I posted a photo of a "high rise" VW Kombi and that prompted me to look for other examples of "custom" Kombi's; a few of my favorites are shown below. Google searches will bring up many more examples.

CRISTINA RAMOS - FROM OPERA TO ROCK AND HOW!

Simon Cowell's "Got Talent" franchise was named the world's most successful reality TV format in April 2014 by Guiness World Records with shows airing in 58 countries.

This video shows an audition by Cristina Ramos that aired during the 2016 season of the Spanish show. The audition started out as, to me at least, an extremely accomplished operatic performance that then provided one of the "wow" moments the shows are noted for, when Ramos transitioned into a spectacular rendition of "AC/DC's "Highway To Hell".

FROG JUMPING LAWS - WHAT DO OUR LAW MAKERS SMOKE?

Sometimes I wonder what our legislator's smoke! Take the California Fish & Game Code Sections 6880-6885 which pertain to "frog-jumping" contests.

First off it applies only to "frog-jumping" contests open to the public AND advertised or announced in a newspaper. So presumably a contest not advertised, or private, or both is an unregulated "free for all".

Then we get a section that seems to say if you seriously injure a frog in the process of taking a frog for a "frog jumping" contest then the assumption is you were not actually taking the frog for a "frog-jumping" contest!

Next we read that anyone can take as many frogs as they like for "frog-jumping" contests but if they die [or are killed] they must be destroyed and cannot be eaten!

And finally if you take frogs but do not keep them in a manner reasonable to preserve their life they are outside of these rules. By implication this means it is perfectly OK to keep them in a manner that is not reasonable to preserve their life, it simply means they are not covered by these regulations.

I will resist the "animal cruelty" aspect of this as the law appears to indicate cruelty is fine and simply removes the frogs from being covered by these rules and speak only to the fact that to me these seem like utterly banal and pointless regulations that some group of legislators one day unaccountably actually thought their crafting was a good use of people's time. I have to believe there are "bigger fish to fry" [or frogs].

MUHAMMAD ALI - GREAT BOXER - GREAT MAN

Muhammad Ali passed a few days ago. He was a great boxer and perhaps an even greater man and certainly a loss to the world at large.

Though I am not religious by nature and despite the fact that my beliefs have changed many times over the course of my life this quote spoke to me. Whether I personally "believe" or not it has always seemed to me incredibly sad and dichotomous that a large number of the wars our species has fought, and continues to fight, have been conducted in the name of religion.

Ali's words from his autobiography "The Soul Of A Butterfly" certainly ring true to me!

CENTRAL PARK - CRUISE SHIP STYLE

You could easily be forgiven for thinking this is a photo of a rather cool land based outdoor atrium, perhaps associated with a large hotel, a mall or other complex.

In fact it is actually one of the "neighborhoods" on board the Royal Carribean cruise ship Oasis Of The Seas taken during a 2015 cruise. Sometimes technology has its issues and perhaps progress is not always for the good but I have to say that in this case that is not so; the Oasis is simply an awe inspiring technological, design and construction marvel.

THEY DON'T MAKE THEM LIKE THAT ANYMORE!

They sure do not make things like they used to! As a youngster I would hear older folks say that and I would swear to myself I would never become "that old guy" but of course we all do in the end. Case in point; car design where, for the most part, these days they all look like they come out of the same mold because of the constant drive for cars designed by computers with ever better aerodynamics in order to get the best gas mileage.

That was not always the case of course, aesthetics took more prominence in a far greater number of design decisions in times gone past, and the Arrowhead car seen below certainly demonstrates that.

Designed in 1936 by W. E. Miller for Arrowhead Water and featuring a striking teardrop shape, round and wide in the front tapering to a point at the back, that was aimed at promoting the company's product by calling to mind a drop of water thus meeting the primary requirement of a marketing vehicle by providing a strong visual connection to the product being marketed.

According to Hemmings.com the vehicle was a great success but lasted only a single year as it was completely destroyed in a wreck in 1937.

JALAL'S 2016 PRANK COMPILATION

It seems that the Jalal brothers video pranks have caused some controversy along the way. They are of course "set ups"; I am surprised anyone would have thought otherwise but there are news stories of the brothers having problems with the authorities [this one among many].

As is almost always the case these days, in my opinion, those in authority are not able to get their priorities right, are ruled by the need for "political correctness" and are totally unable to accept a little harmless fun. At least that is how I see it; make up your own mind based on the sample video below or others on the brothers Youtube Channel.

SO JUST WHERE DO I GET THE PREFERENCES FILE FROM?

As some of you know I work in IT. It has been some time since I did any direct support but I do recall the fun days when I carried a pager and took Helpdesk tickets at all hours.

A quick web search will reveal hundreds of funny photos and stories related to IT support. It might be a bit of a "niche" area, perhaps mainly of interest to IT folks but I came across this the other day and now all I can think of is "Where in the heck can I download the Preferences File from?". It would clearly make solving computer problems a whole heck of a lot easier!

PERSEVERANCE - A MOTIVATIONAL MESSAGE

We have all seen the motivational posters that have become an iconic part of the workplace. Do they actually work? Who knows?

Recently I was interviewing to fill a staff position and one character trait I look for is perseverance; the tenacity to go after it even in the face of difficulty and challenge. That character trait popped into my mind as I was watching a video on Youtube this morning. For some reason I then felt oddly motivated [pun intended] to create this motivational [or not] poster highlighting perseverance.

BIZARRE BRIT SPORTS - TOE WRESTLING - SHIN KICKING

As some of you may know I am an expat Brit living in the USA. I have never been much for patriotism; seems to me where you are born is nothing you had any say in and while I can understand "pride" in accomplishments pride in something you have nothing to do with seems a little odd to me. That said this video depicting brave gladiators from my home country engaged in extreme and dangerous sports almost makes me "puff up my chest" with patriotic pride in the country of my birth. Or perhaps not!

THE WORLD'S SMALLEST PRODUCTION AUTOMOBILE

Tired of trying to park in the crowded city streets, need better gas mileage? Then take a look at the Peel P50, the world's smallest production car [2010 Guinness Book Of Records].

Peel P50 And Lions

The Peel P50 is a three-wheeled that was originally manufactured from 1962 to 1965 by the Peel Engineering Company on the Isle of Man. There was no reverse gear but there was a handle at the rear that allowed the very lightweight car [130 lbs unladen] to be physically maneuvered when required. There was one door, one wiper and one headlight and the Peel achieved a gas mileage of around 100 mph. It sold for around £200; according to usinflationcalculator.com and exchange rates as of 051416 that equates to around $2240 today. Only about 50 Peel's were produced of which around half are thought to still exist but:

You can own a Peel!

In 2010 Peel Engineering Limited began manufacturing Peels again and, while described as a limited edition, the company's website [as of the time of writing] indicates they can still be purchased. Though faithful to the original the new Peels do have updates to make them "street legal" in the 2010's including a reverse gear. Both petrol and electric models are available.

However if the Peel "is you" you should note that they do seem a little pricey for their diminutive size with the petrol model running £12999 plus tax; the electric model is £600 less. To register your interest you can contact the compaby on their website, call them on +44 207 097 5119 or email info@peelengineering.co.uk.

For a better look at the Peel here is a 2008 BBC TV Top Gear feature on the Peel; check out the parking at BBC HQ!

SO YOU WANT TO GET AWAY FROM IT ALL?

Most of us from time to time get the urge to spend a little time "away from it all". The island of Elliðaey, located in the archipelago of Vestmannaeyjar to the south of Iceland looks like it would provide the perfect spot for that "hermit" experience.

According to travel.spotcoolstuff.com the island was inhabited by five families some 300 years ago but, over the next two centuries, life on the island became more and more impractical and the last permanent residents of the island left in the 1930's.

Move forward to 1953 and the Elliðaey Hunting Association built a lodge on the island for its members to use.

Unfortunately that weekend getaway is probably not actually going to happen for most of us because unless you are a member of the Elliðaey Hunting Association or are friends with some one who is [and we all are - right?] you can't stay in the lodge though for those intrepid enough it is possible to visit the island on a boat tour from the main island of Heimaey.

So, for the perfect secluded getaway or at least the dream of the perfect secluded getaway, check out these photos. The first, by Chris Zielecki, gives an idea of just how secluded Elliðaey actually is [Chris' original photo is on Flickr], the second by Diego Delso [CC BY-SA 4.0, https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?curid=37347785] provides a stunning panoramic view of the island and the third is an edited version of Diego's photo that provides a closer look at the area around the hunting lodge.

NBC'S NEXT BIG SERIES - THE VICE PRESIDENT

So Trump is the presumptive Republican nominee for the 2016 US Presidential Election. Having made his name in real estate AND reality TV maybe he needs to look to the latter for a VP that can help him actually get to the White House [and - at risk of my getting "flamed" - I know I should never talk politics here] while I am not particularly enamored of the idea of Hilary may the good Lord help us all if Trump moves from Trump Tower to Pennsylvania Ave.

Survivor is a popular and longtime reality show where the basic premise is this - how do you persuade people you have maligned and "pissed off" to vote to give you the prize! Richard Hatch for VP anyone?

So, continuing the TV Theme perhaps NBC's next big series could be a spin-off of "The Apprentice". You know the show, people get given a task each week and then Trump gets to "fire" the worst performer. Perhaps a collection of VP "candidates" with tasks like "persuade" a group of women to vote for a misogynist, "persuade" Latino voters that he was just joking when he called Latino Immigrants "Criminals" And "Rapists" and so on. I would watch!

ONE MAN'S VERY LUCKY DAY

There are benefits to having a guardian angel looking over your shoulder. I figure this guy had the whole heavenly host working on his behalf. It's a military funeral [Polish I think] and he is one of the soldiers firing off the gun salute. He is standing in the front row of two, third from the left. The guy behind him aims a little low and actually shoots the hat off his head. Talk about a close call.
